10:30am - 12:00pmLecture - Dr. Erika King - From Viral Trends to Valid Treatment: The Communication of Evidence-Based Pediatric Dentistry in the Social Media Era

Course Description:

Summary
In an era where parents increasingly turn to social media for healthcare guidance, pediatric dentists are encountering unprecedented challenges in bridging the gap between trending content, trending slang, and scientifically validated care. From Viral Trends to Valid Treatment, we will explore how the rapid spread of online advice, which often lacks context, evidence, or clinical relevance can shape parental expectations, influences treatment acceptance, and impacts children's oral health outcomes.
This lecture provides a comprehensive, American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry aligned overview of common pediatric dental myths circulating across platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube. Topics include “natural” cavity cures, baby-led oral hygiene trends, fluoride misinformation, home whitening fads for teens, DIY space-maintainers, and sedation/anesthesia misconceptions. Each trend is examined through the lens of current evidence, AAPD best-practice guidelines, and real-world clinical implications.
Attendees will learn strategies for identifying the origins and appeal of viral misinformation, effective communication techniques for counseling families, and methods to reinforce trust by emphasizing science-backed care. The lecture also highlights how pediatric dentists can utilize their own digital presence, professionally, ethically, and within AAPD parameters, to counter myths, educate the public, and promote accurate oral health messaging.
This session will explore some of the latest social media trends and equip clinicians with practical tools to navigate the delivery of anticipatory guidance while empowering them to advocate for children’s oral health by aligning modern communication trends with evidence-based pediatric dentistry.

Objectives

1. Identify some of the latest pediatric dental trends, slang, and myths circulating on social media platforms.

2. Compare viral dental claims with current evidence and AAPD best-practice recommendations.

3. Explain why misinformation spreads rapidly and how it influences family decision-making.

4. Apply effective communication strategies to debunk myths while maintaining rapport and trust.

5. Develop an approach to online patient education that supports accuracy, professionalism, and ethical standards.

6. Utilize digital tools and messaging to promote evidence-based pediatric dentistry and counter misinformation.
